Wilsons Disease Information
Wilsons Disease is very common
Disorders and it is also known as hepatolenticular degeneration. Wilsons Disease can be defined as the
rare autossomal recessive inherited disease and Wilsons Disease is primarly caused by an acumulation of copper in tissues all over the body, mainly in the liver, brain, kidneys and cornea.
Wilsons Disease mostly affects mostly young pacients, the median age being between 8 and 20 years. Any person with recurrent hepatic disease and unexplained neurologic symptoms should be investigated to have Wilson's disease. Liver disease occurs in half of the patients.
The main cause of
Wilsons Disease is presence of excess copper in the body.
Excess copper is toxic and can damage the organs.
Excess copper can cause inflammation in the liver ( hepatitis ) and scarring ( cirrhosis ), and brain damage. In Wilson's disease this process fails, causing copper to build up in the body. This mainly damages the liver but can also affect other organs, especially the brain.
